I know this is different than the things I’ve been writing about lately but this is something I’ve been discussing with people for a little while and I want to write it all down in one place.
I see a lot of posts from people that REALLY miss the 10th Doctor. This is (one reason) why the 50th Anniversary episode had so many people excited. The creators and writers of the show have said that they won’t bring back the past incarnations of the Doctor all the time because it ruins the idea that all the Doctor’s incarnations are still the same person. I can completely understand that from their POV since it is already difficult for me to think of them as the same person (honestly if I did think of them that way I would have a very hard time not screaming “stop it that isn’t Rose” every time the 11th Doctor touched anyone female). So, I completely agree that past incarnations of the Doctor should not return on any kind of regular basis.
BUT it isn’t necessary for any wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff to occur for David Tennant to reappear on the show. He can appear without bouncing around his own time line. It’s almost like people forget about the 10th Doctor mostly human….clone….guy that was left in the parallel universe with Rose Tyler. What if the 12th Doctor crossed paths withRose and the clone?
(yes, yes I know he isn’t a clone but I don’t know wtf else to call him…for the purpose of simplicity from here on out he will be referred to as David after all he would have had to come up with some kind of name to call himself anyway and that one is as good as any other)
The rift was closed and the parallel universe was once again shut off from the universe the Doctor inhabits. So, based on that it shouldn’t be possible for them to ever cross paths but Rose shouldn’t have been able to come back to begin with. David shouldn’t have been created at all but she came back and he was. Anything can happen on this show. This isn’t exactly a linear logical world we are watching. They can justify pretty much anything they want. So, another rift is created or Torchwood in that universe finds some way to send Rose and David back to the world they came from to complete some mission or even simply because they came from that world and thus they belong there. Or the 12th Doctor somehow gets transported to the world Rose and David now inhabit. It could easily occur one of a hundred different ways.
My favorite of the options is for the 12th Doctor (and maybe Clara) to get transported to the parallel universe. I like the idea of the Doctor himself, who has traveled through time and all over space, to be in unfamiliar territory. Once there he maybe wouldn’t even know where he was…..until he runs across Torchwood in that world and with it he finds Rose and David. Neither would recognize him at first. After all David and the Doctor only share memories up until the time David was created. Sincethen they have formed new wholly separate memories not shared by the other. The Doctor himself would know them though. And then he would know where he was.
Since the Doctor would be trapped in that universe he would have to just live there…for a while anyway…but the TARDIS came with him. So, they can explore that universe at least (while he also figures out how to get back to his own universe….because chances are whatever it was that sent him to the parallel universe is likely up to no good back in his own universe). So, the entire season of the show when this is occurring would take place in the parallel universe, the Doctor (and maybe Clara) with Rose and David as companions would travel around that universe (and back and forth through that universe’s timeline) seeing things that are wholly new to all three of them with the over all story arch being the Doctor trying to find a way back home to save the universe from whatever threw him out of it.
I think the dynamic of the Doctor (in his older appearing incarnation with a wholly different personality) with David and Rose would be extremely interesting. It would be fascinating (for both the audience and the writers) to explore the relationship between the Doctor, his former love (because face it…that IS who Rose is) and David, who is a part of the Doctor but also now an entirely different person. As I stated before they only share memories to a point. Now, with the Doctor having gone through two regenerations since David’s creation and many years having passed with Rose and David assumingly living as a couple – they would be very very different people now…..with little in common except for the hundreds of years of past memories that they share. Even Rose would, at this point, be a very different person than she was the last time we saw her. Both would even have aged visibly (or could have depending on when this season actually occurred…if itever occurred that is). It would make for a great season of the show and they would have SO much new territory to explore both in the new uncharted universe (and timeline) and in the characters themselves.
Plus, it would give the fans of David Tennant and Billie Piper another seasons worth of episodes with them. Obviously, it couldn’t go on forever and at the end of the season The Doctor would get back to his own world (somehow) and likely Rose and David would stay behind (hopefully still together, alive and happy…..I like happy endings) but there would be so much they could do for that one season and it would be so great for fans of Rose (we miss her…a lot) and even though it wouldn’t REALLY be the 10th Doctor it would be close to him (and would still have the same basic personality) and it would be David Tennant at least returning for a while (We miss him, too).
I don’t think I’m the only one that would enjoy this. I think it would end up being one of the best seasons of the show of all time and it would be a fan favorite for sure. Am I wrong? Would no one else love to see this happen? I want it to happen so badly I’m tempted to write an entire season’s worth of fanfiction about it
(Show still from Journey’s End…which I do not own or have any rights too…unfortunately. I’m just borrowing it.)
