I really had low expectations for this. It sounded good but it just didn’t seem like a frozen gluten free version would be very good. It just made me want to find a restaurant that serves a gluten free version of it. Or to try to make my own.
I forgot to get a picture of it frozen but this is what it looked like after microwaving.
It didn’t look promising then either. The ravioli looked white and uncooked and the veggies looked limp and bland.
After tasting it, though, I was surprised that it actually IS really good. Its very flavorful. You can taste the sweet potato and the kale, mushrooms and red peppers add a nice zing (and pretty color). The sauce that it is all in tastes slightly buttery. It doesn’t have a strong flavor and could possibly even be appealing to a child. Although some pasta sauce would maybe be needed for a child to like it. It might be TO bland for some children and some adults but I don’t find it bland at all. It just isn’t over powering with flavor. It has subtle tastes and thats perfect for me.
The texture of the ravioli itself is a bit…rubbery but not really badly rubbery and not in any way that makes me not want to eat more of it. I honestly never expect perfect pasta texture in frozen meals. Even the gluten containing ones rarely have perfect texture. The taste of this one is good and the texture isn’t off putting. So, I’m happy enough with it.
It isn’t perfect though. The portion size is tiny. This wouldn’t fill anyone up (except maybe a small child). It wasn’t cheap. I think i paid between $5 and $7 for it (I honestly can’t remember for sure but I have seen it priced in that range at different places). For that price the portion size really should be bigger. That however wouldn’t stop me from buying it again on occasion except…
It also contains dairy. I don’t digest dairy very well and I know this is a common issue with people who also can’t eat gluten. From reading the ingredients the dairy really wasn’t important enough to include. This is an issue i’ve found Udi’s to often have. They like to include dairy. Most of their frozen meals contain cheese and this one, the only one I could find without cheese listed on the front, still contains cream AND parmesan cheese. I can understand the cheese in the other pasta meals but this one could have done without the cream and parmesan (which I can’t even taste) and saved me the stomach ache. I wanted to try it once but I won’t buy it again because of the dairy that could have easily been left out or substituted.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars. The small portion with the high price and the including of cheese and cream that it could have done without cost it a star.
