This is my first Fandom of the Month club box. I was always hesitant to subscribe because with shipping it’s over $16 a month and it’s jewelry. I don’t really wear jewelry. I don’t wear it largely because I’m allergic to most metals (ALL metals actually….except surgical steel..anything else turns my skin green at best, gives me hives, welts or swelling at worst). I can usually wear necklaces, though. They only touch my skin around my neck and as long as I don’t wear it to long it usually isn’t an issue. Most of the past boxes had necklaces and I liked a lot of them. So, I finally decided to give it a shot. I figured October was a good month to start.
First off..the box itself is awesome. The literal box. I think it’s now my favorite box out of all of the sub boxes I have seen.
It’s so cute.
And it advertises the sub to anyone that happens to see the box. Which is probably good exposure.
And the definition of “fandom” on the inside edge is perfectly places. It’s the first thing you see when you open the box.
Anyway….moving on to the actual contents.
People guessing that the theme would be Supernatural also made me want to try it. I’m not the biggest Supernatural fan or anything but I like it and it has so much symbology associated with it that I knew the jewelry would be cool.
For anyone not aware of the details of this box, Fandom of the Month is a monthly subscription box of jewelry. Each month is a different theme. Previous month’s themes have been Harry Potter, Super Mario, Percy Jackson, Doctor Who, Once Upon A Time…and many others. I’m sad I missed Once Upon A Time and Doctor Who (although I do already have one of the items from the Doctor Who one). It seems TV shows, books, movies or video games are all fair play.
Each box includes 3 to 5 pieces of jewelry (3 seems to be the most common amount), a magnet and a bag. All items fit into the month’s theme.
Some of the jewelry is picked out and purchased and some is designed by the girl who runs the box. She also has her own fandom jewelry shop called The Geeky Cauldron. The magnet is designed by her sister who also has her own fandom shop, Half Blood Prints. If you’re interested in fandom items definitely check out those shops as well their other sister’s shop The Sorcerer’s Phone.
The bags are designed and printed by S & S Ink. I’ll put links to all the shops at the end of the review. The bags are one of reasons I joined. I knew if nothing else I would love all of the bags.
The magnet is the first actual item I saw when I opened the box. Everything else was inside of the bag. It’s a cute magnet. Although, I like the Supernatural magnets on the Halfblood Prints website that feature the pentagram and license plate more. I may purchase those eventually, actually. They’ll go well with this one.
I actually love these earrings. I think they’re the perfect combination of fandom and obscure. I wish I could wear them and I’ve been trying to think of a way to convert them to ones that I could wear but so far I can’t think of anything that would look good. So, I may trade these eventually. Maybe. I really like them. So, I may hang on to them and hope I figure out how to wear them.
This is my least favorite item at first glance. I just don’t love bulky rings. I won’t say I’ll never wear it. I may wear it at some point. It looks cute on, actually.
I guess I’m just not a big fan of rings in general. They turn my fingers green pretty quickly. Plus I have knuckle tattoos. If I liked and wore rings I would possibly like this one more. *shrug*
This is the item I saw a sneak peak of. You couldn’t really tell what it looked like in the sneak peak but they did say it was a necklace. I believe it was an original design for the box. I really like it. I’ll wear it on occasion, I’m sure. I’ll definitely be hanging it up in my office once I get one set up after we move. I’m tempted to hang it in my car, now but i’m not quite ready to take down the Doctor Who necklace that hangs there now. Plus I don’t want this one to get kinked up because I will actually wear it sometimes.
This was a good first box, I think. Next months box is going to be a bit different apparently. It’s going to be 5 pieces of jewelry from 5 different fandoms. The fandoms will be the 5 favorite fandoms of the creator of the box. So, Harry Potter will certainly be one of them. I’m not sure about the others. This is in celebration of it being the 1 year anniversary of Fandom of the Month Club.
