So when a friend recently posted photos on Facebook of the new Ben & Jerry’s Non-Dairy ice creams, I was pretty excited.
At first I thought nowhere near me would have them but it turns out Walmart and Harris Teeter are carrying them. Even Walmart in my small S.C. town had them. Chunky Monkey was sold out when I first found them but my husband found it in another store.
Now, admittedly, it does not taste exactly like original Chunky Monkey. The base flavor has that definite almond milk taste. It isn’t over powering, though. The banana is definitely the main flavor. The almond milk taste is just also there.
The other difference is that the almond milk gives it a lighter texture. It isn’t as thick and creamy as the original. It is still creamy and ice cream textured. It just doesn’t have the heavy cream texture of the original.
The chocolate tastes the same to me but the pieces are chunkier as opposed to the more square kind in the original. I assume this is just due to a different kind being used so as to avoid any dairy being in the chocolate. I was surprised the taste was the same.
All of that said, the ice cream is delicious. I’m thrilled to have an easy to find non-dairy ice cream that isn’t coconut milk based. I don’t like coconut milk ice cream at all and it always seems to be the only option anywhere has.
I’ve seen three dairy free flavors so far. I’m unsure if there are more than that. Has anyone seen more than three flavors?
