Ben & Jerry’s released four non dairy, almond based ice creams recently. I previously reviewed the Chunky Monkey but this flavor, Coffee Caramel Fudge, was actually the first flavor I found.
I have never tried the regular version of this flavor. So, I can’t write a comparison of the two. I imagine the texture is similar to how it was with Chunky Monkey. This is thinner and lighter, as almond milk based ice cream usually is, than regular Ben & Jerry’s. It is still creamy, though. It still has the feel of ice cream.
The ice cream has chunks of chocolate in it that are crunchy and very chocolatey. The ice cream itself has a strong coffee flavor. It tastes almost smokey in a way. I don’t really taste caramel in it but I imagine it is mingled in there but the coffee is overpowering it. The coffee flavor also overpowers the almond milk taste, though.
I loved the ice cream but every time I ate it it gave me heartburn. So, I took a closer look at the ingredients. I should have looked closer before buying it. It includes malt extract from barley. It didn’t even occur to me that it might contain gluten. I always forget about malt being snuck into things.
