I have tried a lot of dairy and gluten free Mac and cheese. Most of it is really gross.
Previously, the only I had found that was decent was in Chicago at a place called Native Foods. They made their own cheese sauce from cashews. It was delicious. I was early in my pregnancy and not very much still tasted good at that point (later on most things tasted amazing but not right then). Since Native Foods hadn’t expanded to my area at that time (and still hasn’t) I thought I’d never get good Mac and cheese again.
Then I found these little frozen meals. They taste pretty similar to the Native Foods Mac and cheese. At least as similar as a frozen meal possibly could. I add a little pepper to it but that’s all it needs.
It’s cheesy and the pasta is a good texture. It’s not overly mushy or gummy or any of the common issues with gluten free pasta.
The pasta is rice pasta and the cheese sauce is tapioca and arrowroot flour based.
It’s not cheap. They’re fairly small and they generally cost between $3 and $4 a piece. Which is pretty par for the course for Amy’s and gluten free frozen meals in general. Personally, I don’t mind the cost for the food Mac and cheese. It’s not like you should be living off of freezer Mac and cheese anyway and the price isn’t bad for a treat or a light lunch on occasion. So, I don’t mind the price but it definitely could be an issue for some people. It also means I can’t buy them very often. I’m not complaining about anything when it comes to good gluten and dairy free Mac and cheese, though.
This version of Amy’s Mac & Cheese can be difficult to find. Only two stores near me carry the gluten and dairy free version (Earth Fare and Publix). If you need only gluten free but can tolerate dairy then you can find that version in more stores, though. The regular kind is even easier to find, of course.
